Computer Access

Log on at your Library! Each branch has computers available for the public with access to the internet, children's games, and Microsoft Office programs. A library card is the only item needed to gain access to these riches. Adults, young adults (with parental permission) and children accompanied by their parent can utilize the Internet. Computer Classes

The Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library Computer Training Lab offers a wide variety of free computer classes (see class offerings below). Each class covers basic information. You may take a class as many times as needed.

Classes are generally offered at 10:00am, 1:00pm, or 6:00pm; however, special arrangements can be made for your group or organization. Each class lasts approximately 90 minutes.

If you would like more information or would like to register for a class, please call the Computer Training Instructor at the Captain Hampton Library at (864) 850-7077. You may also register by emailing the Reference Department at reference@pickens.lib.sc.us. A Reference Librarian will contact you via email with your confirmation of classes or the information you requested.

New to Computers? Try these beginning classes:

Computer Basics – A basic introduction to computers, including an explanation of the parts of the computer and an exercise to help master the mouse.

Internet – Learn the basic terms associated with the Internet, as well as how to navigate and find information.

E-mail – No more stamps! Want to correspond with friends and family using the computer? Learn the basics of using e-mail with the free email provider Yahoo.

Keyboarding – If you need to practice your typing skills this class if for you. We’ll show some selected web sites for learning how to type, and how to type more proficiently. The rest of the class time is used for practice.

Getting started in Microsoft Office? Try these classes:

Word I – An introduction to Microsoft Word. Learn how to edit and format your documents using this word processing program.

Word II – This class continues the Word I class and covers some of the more advanced features of Microsoft Word; including columns, tables and handy shortcuts.

PowerPoint – Learn how to create a slide presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Changing jobs? Try these classes:

Job Seeker – Unemployed or looking for a better job? This class will show you how to search online for your next job.

Resumes – This class will take you step by step through the process of making a resume using Microsoft Word.

Know the basics but want to learn more? Try these classes:

Internet Research – Refine your internet search skills using our specialized databases and selected websites.

Security – Learn what you need to do to protect your computer from viruses, worms, and other harmful programs.

Buying a Computer – If it’s time to update your computer, or buy a new one, this class is for you. Learn what you need to know before buying your next computer.

Google – Google.com is much more than a search engine. Come find out all the “extras” available on this web site!

Special interest topics available:

eBay – Introduction to buying and selling on the popular online auction site eBay.

Flickr – Do you have a bunch of digital photos cluttering up your hard drive? This class will show you how to use the web site Flickr.com to organize and share your photos.

Genealogy – Looking for your ancestors? Learn to research your family history using the Internet and library resources.

Health Resources – Learn how to find reliable health information on the Internet using selected websites.

Travel Resources – Before you book that trip come to our Travel Resources class. We’ll show you how to save time and money on your next vacation.

Spanish classes available:

Spanish Basics and Spanish Internet – Our Computer Basics and Internet classes taught in Spanish.

House Calls

This service is open to all residents of Pickens County who are unable to come into the Library System locations. Contact us and ask for our House Calls Librarian. They will help you fill out the application form and decide on what materials you are interested in receiving. The Librarian will then select materials, following your wishes, which will then be delivered to you once a month by a library volunteer. Materials may also be picked up by a friend or a relative at a prearranged time.

Library Tours

Learn how to use the Library's collections by scheduling a topic specific session with one of our staff members for your organization or take a guided tour at any location. The tours can be tailored to the specific interests of the organization and can last 30 minutes or more.

Meeting, Conference, and Study Rooms

Reserve one of our meeting rooms or the computer training lab for your organization's next event. Each Branch has a variety of spaces available to accommodate non-profit meetings, community activities and Pickens County business meetings. (Review our Meeting Room Policy.) Use of the rooms is free, so sign up early. To reserve a meeting room, complete the meeting room policy application or contact the local branch manager.

Find a quiet place to finish homework, meet your tutor, join a study group or research a project in one of the Library's many study rooms. Easley and Central have study rooms available on a first come basis.

Ask questions here! Each branch of the Library System has Reference Librarians available to help you find what you need as quickly and efficiently as possible.
