The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
Inspired by the true story of early-nineteenth century abolitionist and suffragist Sarah Grinke, Kidd tells a story of two women inextricably linked by the horrors of slavery. On her eleventh birthday, Sarah is gifted a 10-year-old girl named Hetty to be her handmaid. The girls form a complex friendship characterized by both respect and resentment. Though their pain and struggles cannot be equated, over the course of their lives they both struggle for liberation and empowerment.
