Whistling Season by Ivan Doig
It is the late 1950s and the Soviet satellite launch has pushed the US into an educational panic. The ramifications of this startled condition reverberate throughout rural Montana as Superintendent Paul Milliron announces that all one-room schoolhouses will be closed. As the burden of this announcement weighs on Paul, he reflects upon his own experience in a one-room schoolhouse 43 years ago. His nostalgic look back forms the body of this charming novel. Readers meet a 13 year old Paul, his widowed father, their beautiful housekeeper, and her eccentric brother. Endearing and funny happenings are interspersed with glimpses into the hardships and cruelties of a remote existence in an unforgiving land.
